Does readability improve?
Buchner and Baumgartner (2007) found dark-on-light text (positive polarity) outperformed light-on-dark regardless of ambient light. Piepenbrock et al. (2013) found the advantage in both younger and older adults, and later work (2014) linked it to smaller pupils and greater depth of field on bright screens. Long-reading screens are safer with light mode as default and dark mode as an option.
Battery and context
The clear win is power on OLED screens. Dash and Hu (2021) measured real phones and showed savings grow with brightness and shrink at low brightness; LCDs barely benefit. Dark mode also cuts glare in dark rooms, so context, meaning when and on which screen, is what matters.
Designing dark mode well
Pure black with pure white can feel harsh and cause halation, so dark greys and slightly dimmed white are common. Define semantic colour roles rather than inverting colours, follow the system setting as Apple advises while allowing an in-app switch, and use CSS prefers-color-scheme on the web. Every theme must still meet the WCAG 2.2 4.5:1 colour contrast criterion for web accessibility.
FAQ
- Is dark mode better for eye health?
- Studies show light mode reads better in bright conditions, though dark mode can be more comfortable in the dark.
- How much battery does dark mode save?
- On OLED screens it grows with brightness; on LCDs it is negligible.
