Two approaches
For fixed shapes, fix the frame and pan/pinch zoom the image; for free crops, drag corner handles sized for thumbs (Parhi et al., 2006). The system photo picker (Android Developers, n.d.) avoids permission prompts.
Good defaults and previews
Saliency-centered crops aid recognition (Suh et al., 2003); center detected faces. Faces are judged fast (Willis & Todorov, 2006), so preview the avatar size. Render with drawImage (MDN, n.d.).
Undo and accessibility
Clear Cancel/Done (Apple, n.d.), Reset and undo; keep the original. Add zoom, ratio and arrow buttons per WCAG 2.2 (W3C, 2023) 2.5.7.
