History and scholarship
Drowning research underpins lifesaving. Frank Pia (1974) described the instinctive drowning response; Szpilman et al. (2012, NEJM) reviewed pathophysiology and care; Bierens (2014) edited the standard reference; and WHO (2014) framed drowning as a leading killer. Korea is reported to have made it a national qualification in the mid-2010s.
