History and scholarship

Tour guides are a core topic in tourism research. Erik Cohen (1985, Annals of Tourism Research) analysed the guide as combining 'pathfinder' and 'mentor' roles; MacCannell (1976) theorised staged authenticity and Urry (1990) the tourist gaze. Ap and Wong (2001) examined guide professionalism, and Weiler and Black (2015) reviewed the field.

Getting it

It is generally described as replacing the language test with official scores (TOEIC, JLPT, HSK etc.), followed by written subjects (Korean history, tourism resources, law, tourism studies) and an interview. Check each round's notice for thresholds. Requirements, subjects, credit and practicum rules, pass criteria and dates can change; always check the administering body's notice and current law.

Work and careers

Inbound travel agencies, tourist information centres, cruises and MICE events, or freelance guiding. Museum interpretation overlaps with curators.
