Overview

Coined by nurse Joinson (1992) and developed by Figley (1995) as secondary traumatic stress. Unlike burnout, which stems from workload, it arises from exposure to others’ trauma. Stamm’s ProQOL measures compassion satisfaction, burnout and secondary trauma. Supervision, peer support and boundaries help.

Frequently asked questions

Is it caused by too much empathy?
Mainly by unrelieved exposure to suffering.
