Overview

Korea’s Long-Term Care Insurance (LTCI) is a social insurance run by the National Health Insurance Service (NHIS). People aged 65+, or younger people with geriatric diseases such as dementia, stroke or Parkinson’s disease, can apply. After a home visit assessment and a doctor’s report, a committee assigns grades 1–5 or the cognitive support grade. Benefits include home-based care (home visits, bathing, nursing, day/night care, short-term care, assistive devices), facility care, and special cash benefits in under-served areas. Users pay a co-payment, higher for facility care; recipients of basic livelihood benefits are exempt.
