Background
In the age of TV and print, nobody could pin down how much an ad contributed to sales. Department store magnate John Wanamaker supposedly said, "Half the money I spend on advertising is wasted; the trouble is I don't know which half." Google AdWords launched pay-per-click search ads in 2000, and conversion-tracking tags spread across websites. Advertisers could finally follow a customer from ad click to purchase. As e-commerce and Facebook and Instagram ads grew, ROAS became a core performance-marketing KPI. In the 2010s Google added automated bidding toward a target ROAS.
Calculation and break-even ROAS
If $1,000 in ads produces $4,000 in sales, ROAS is 4x, or 400%. Revenue isn't profit, though, so work out your break-even ROAS from your margin: break-even ROAS = 1 ÷ margin. At a 25% margin you need 4x just to break even. ROAS is revenue-based, while ROI is based on profit after costs. A campaign can show a high ROAS and still lose money.
Pitfalls and improvement
ROAS swings with attribution, meaning which ad gets credit for a sale. Branded search ads shown to people who were already going to buy look great on ROAS but add little real revenue. Tracking also got less accurate after Apple's 2021 App Tracking Transparency rollout. Judging only first-purchase ROAS undervalues businesses that profit from repeat buyers, so weigh it against customer lifetime value and CAC. The basic fixes are to A/B test creatives and landing pages and to concentrate budget on the audiences that convert best.
FAQ
- What's a good ROAS?
- It depends on margins. At minimum, beat break-even ROAS (1 ÷ margin). Many e-commerce brands aim for 3–4x.
- How is ROAS different from ROI?
- ROAS compares revenue to ad spend; ROI compares net profit to total investment.
