History

In the mid-1990s, when Yahoo and AltaVista dominated search, repeating keywords on a page was enough to climb the rankings. In 1998 Stanford graduate students Larry Page and Sergey Brin built Google on PageRank, which treated links from other sites as votes of trust. Link buying and other spam soon followed. Google fought back with Panda (2011), which targeted thin content, and Penguin (2012), which targeted manipulative links. It added mobile-friendliness (2015) and page experience, or Core Web Vitals (2021), as ranking signals. From 2022 it stressed E-E-A-T (experience, expertise, authoritativeness, trust) and "helpful content written for people."

Key factors

SEO is usually split into three areas:

  • On-page SEO: research the keywords and intent behind real searches, then work them naturally into titles, meta descriptions, headings, and body text.
  • Technical SEO: help crawlers index pages with sitemaps, fast loading, mobile support, structured data, and canonical URLs. Multilingual sites use hreflang to point to each language version.
  • Off-page SEO: earn backlinks that reputable sites give naturally.

Internal links between related pages work especially well on information-rich sites such as wikis.

AI Overviews and chatbot answers increasingly resolve queries without a click. That makes accurate, well-structured content that gets cited as a source more valuable than ever. SEO brings in steady traffic without ad spend, which lowers customer acquisition cost, but results typically take three to six months to appear. Unlike paid campaigns measured by ROAS, its returns compound over time.

FAQ

How long does SEO take to work?
Usually 3–6 months for a new site, and a year or more for competitive keywords.
Is buying backlinks okay?
No. It violates Google's policies and can lead to ranking drops or deindexing.
