Enactment and amendment
In the credential race of the 2000s, applicants often handed over original documents they never got back and heard nothing about results. The Act took effect in January 2014 to require document returns and bar charging applicants. After public-sector hiring scandals surfaced in 2018, a July 2019 amendment banned improper pressure and bribery. It also banned collecting applicants' appearance, height, weight, hometown, marital status, or assets, and their family members' education, jobs, or assets.
Key rules
False job ads and unfavorable changes to advertised terms are banned, and employers must tell applicants their schedule and results. Rejected applicants may request the return of documents. The Act's principles also underpin public-sector blind hiring. Smaller workplaces aren't covered.
