Insight learning

🧠 Psychology By CampusDown Wiki Editorial Team Last updated
Insight learning is learning in which a solution appears suddenly when a person or animal grasps the relationships among the elements of a problem in a new way. Gestalt psychologist Wolfgang Köhler made it famous through his observations of chimpanzees on Tenerife in the 1910s.

What is insight learning?

Insight learning is learning in which a solution appears suddenly when the relationships among the elements of a problem are grasped in a new way. Gestalt psychologist Wolfgang Köhler made it famous with observations of chimpanzees at a research station on Tenerife from 1913, published in 1917 and in English as The Mentality of Apes (1925).

📌 At a glance
Meaning
Sudden solution through a new grasp of relationships in the whole situation
Researcher
Wolfgang Köhler
Background
Gestalt psychology (the whole is more than the sum of its parts)
Features
Sudden solution, transfer, long retention

Köhler’s chimpanzee studies

How did a chimpanzee reach a banana that was out of reach? Köhler placed food out of reach, hanging from the ceiling or outside the cage, and watched the chimpanzees. After trying and failing, they paused, looked around, and then stacked boxes to climb or used sticks to pull the banana closer. A chimpanzee named Sultan was reported to join two short sticks into a longer one to reach the food.

Köhler interpreted this not as lucky trial and error but as seeing boxes and sticks anew as tools for reaching the banana.

Insight vs trial and error

AspectTrial and error (Thorndike)Insight (Köhler)
ProcessErrors decline gradually over many attemptsSudden solution after a pause
CoreStimulus–response connections strengthened by consequencesGrasping the whole situation (restructuring)
TraditionBehaviorismGestalt and cognitive psychology
TransferOften limited to similar situationsTransfers well to new situations

Compare operant conditioning and classical conditioning.

The aha moment and teaching

The sudden "Aha!" when a problem clicks is called the aha experience. To support insight, teachers can arrange materials so the whole problem is visible, allow time to think, and ask questions that shift perspective rather than giving answers. Latent learning is another classic example of cognitive learning.

Criticisms

Critics note that the chimpanzees’ prior experience with sticks and boxes may have contributed. Insight builds on past experience, so the two are not mutually exclusive.

Frequently asked questions

What is insight learning?
Learning in which a solution appears suddenly through a new grasp of a problem’s relationships, made famous by Köhler’s chimpanzee studies.
How does it differ from trial and error?
Trial and error improves gradually through repetition; insight restructures the whole situation and solves it suddenly.
What is the aha experience?
The moment a solution suddenly becomes clear.
