The burden of roles

Goode (1960) saw strain as normal, managed by dropping, ranking or bargaining over roles; Merton (1957) showed the role-set produces conflicting expectations.

Conflict and ambiguity

Kahn et al. (1964) linked role conflict and ambiguity to stress; Greenhaus and Beutell (1985) classified work–family conflict. Compare social role theory and the sick role.

Are multiple roles harmful?

Sieber (1974) stressed role accumulation's rewards, Marks (1977) energy expansion, and Thoits (1983) the benefits of multiple identities.

FAQ

What is it in simple terms?
The stress of trying to be a good student, worker and child at once.
Are many roles always bad?
