Concept
Therapeutic recreation is a profession that uses games, sport, art, music, horticulture and other activities as treatment in hospitals, rehabilitation centres, long-term care, mental health services and the community. In the United States practitioners can be Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialists (CTRS).
The Leisure Ability Model
Peterson and Gunn (1984) organised services into three areas:
- Functional intervention: improving physical, cognitive and social deficits.
- Leisure education: leisure awareness, social skills and use of leisure resources.
- Recreation participation: applying skills in real activities.
The goal is freely chosen, independent leisure. Other models include the Health Protection/Health Promotion Model.
Process
Services follow assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation (APIE), revising the plan as results come in.
