بيّن آلي (1931) أن الحيوانات المتجمعة تتحمل السموم والجفاف أفضل، وميّز كورشان وزملاؤه (1999) بين أثر المكوّن وأثر الجماعة.

القوي والضعيف

في الأثر الضعيف يتباطأ النمو فقط، أما في القوي فيصبح النمو سالباً دون كثافة حرجة، ومن آلياته صعوبة إيجاد الشريك ونقص التلقيح.

التطبيقات

يفسر تعثر تعافي الأنواع المستنزفة، ويُستغل في إدارة الحشرات الغازية بخفضها دون الكثافة الحرجة (ليبهولد وتوبين، 2008).
