Concept and spread
The statement expands each line of a résumé's work history into duties and outcomes. It resembles the Experience section of a Western résumé. In Korea it became a standard document after 2000, as rolling hiring of experienced staff and headhunting grew. With NCS-based hiring in 2015, public institutions began asking even new graduates for a career statement covering paid work and a separate experience statement covering unpaid activities.
Structure
List positions in reverse chronological order with employer, department, dates, and title. Under each, describe projects as goal, your role, what you did, and the result. Quantify results, as in "cut processing time from two days to four hours," and name the tools you used. A cover letter tells a story about motivation and values. The career statement should be dry and specific enough for an interviewer to verify.
For new graduates
Internships, part-time jobs, contract work, and freelancing all count. Pick the duties that relate to the target role and state results, such as "built an Excel ordering sheet; cut waste from 8% to 3%." Inflated claims tend to surface in interviews and reference checks.
FAQ
- Is it the same as a portfolio?
- No. The statement describes work in text; a portfolio shows the work itself.
- How do I handle confidential details?
- Generalize them, e.g., "a major domestic retailer" or "double-digit growth."
