ドーソン（1994）は、黒人中産層が成長しても黒人有権者が階級で分かれない理由を、集団に良いことは自分にも良いという黒人効用ヒューリスティックで説明しました。
意義と拡張
この概念は社会的アイデンティティ理論と結びつき、ゲイとテイト（1998）は黒人女性の交差的分析を、サンチェスとマスオカ（2010）はラティーノへの拡張を示しました。
