研究の出発と測定
スタウファー（1955）は、共産主義者や無神論者に演説や教職などの自由を認めるかを尋ね、一般市民は指導層より寛容でないという結果を示しました。サリヴァンら（1979）は、回答者が最も嫌う集団を自ら選び、その権利を認めるかを尋ねる測定法を提案しました。
寛容を左右する要因
マーカスら（1995）は、集団への脅威の知覚が不寛容を最も強く予測すると示しました。ネルソンら（1997）は、同じ集会の報道でも「表現の自由」の枠組みで接した人は「公共の秩序」の枠組みの人より寛容であることを実験で示しました。感情的分極化とも関連します。
民主主義との関係
ギブソン（1992）は、不寛容な社会の雰囲気が個人の表現の自由の感覚を下げることを示しました。サリヴァンとトランスー（1999）は、寛容、信頼、社会関係資本が民主主義の心理的土台をなすと整理しました。
